Unique Stays
Over the years, Backpacker Concierge has become known for its mix-and-matched accommodation. A little luxury here and a little authenticity there go a long way when spending weeks on the road.
The listings here are some of the more unique stays an intrepid traveler can have while crisscrossing China. Most of the experiences are quite rugged, but can easily be paired with stunning boutique accommodation for that well-rounded itinerary.
This is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture and have a one-of-a-kind sleep.
Great Wall Homestay
From Beijing, head to an unrestored and untouched part of China’s most distinct landmark – the Great Wall. Here, you will hike the steep slopes and picnic in one of the abandoned watchtowers before you descend to one of the nearby villages for your homestay experience.
Live like a local as you help make dinner (or simply relax in the courtyard and enjoy a cool beer) and interact with your host family.
This is the perfect alternative to crowded Great Wall experiences, especially if you are looking to combine the site with a unique stay.
Note: We do not arrange “camping on the Great Wall” experiences.
Desert Camping
As part of an Inner Mongolia bespoke program or as a standalone experience, the Badain Jaran Desert awaits you.
This is the fourth largest desert in the world and home to the tallest stationary dunes you will ever see – some measuring over 500 meters in height!
The Badain Jaran has long been feared by travelers because of the mysterious whistling noises emanating from within the dunes. There are plenty of theories as to why the sands sing – what will yours be?
Combine this amazing camping excursion with a desert safari and you have the perfect unique stay.
Tribal Homestay
Try saying Xishuangbanna three times!
Walk through the jungle and hunker down in a minority village here for a night or two, as you explore the dense rainforests. You will stay with a local family in their wooden house and learn about their local customs and cuisine.
You can explore the nearby old-world village and hemp plantations and even reach an Akha village (known mostly in Thailand) by way of a multi-hour hike.
There is no better ending to an amazing trek than a unique stay.
Yurts
Whether it’s a Uyghur homestay or Mongolian yurt, we have got you covered. There is no better immersion experience than living like a local.
One of our favorite yurt experiences takes place in the Hulun Buir Grasslands where you can breath pure air while gazing at the endless plains of green grass dotted with crystal clear lakes. Named after two Mongolia lovers Hulun and Buir, many local legends are rooted in these stunning grasslands.
Get a taste of the nomadic lifestyle by spending a night in a yurt made out of yak materials and luxuriate in a warm cup of butter tea before going to sleep.
