Egypt: Sailing the Nile

Discover the Nile

Ever since Agathe Christie’s Death on the Nile, generations of travelers have dreamed of exploring the monuments and villages of southern Egypt by boat. Backpacker Concierge offers four types of expeditions:

Traditional Felucca
- Shared living and sleeping spaces

Private Dahabiya
- Up to 10 en suite bedrooms

Private Lake Nasser Expeditions
- Private 4-cabin vessels or shared sleeping space vessels

Classic 5-star Cruises
- 25-60 cabin vessels starting from Luxor or Aswan

Feluccas

Our private, full-service felucca is glamorous in its own special way, offering home-cooked Egyptian food, locally-brewed beer, and friendly Nubian hospitality.

Passengers enjoy their days and nights on the giant mattress that dominates the felucca. For those that enjoy sunbathing, the awning is removable. Meanwhile, the chef will whip up an array of local dishes from the on-board kitchen.

If you noticed, there is no toilet on-board. Don’t worry! The felucca will make frequent stops to let nature take its course or, if you reserve early enough, you can use our eco-toilet and pop-up tent.

We offer an array of felucca journeys, originating from beautiful Aswan or quaint Edfu. Choose from below to see our itineraries and prices:

- 2 days / 1 night
- 3 days / 2 nights

Dahabiyas

The Dahabiyat were the transport of choice for sophisticated travelers who loved to cruise the Nile in style during the monarchy of the 20s and 30s. These aristocrats would rent the beautiful vessels for several weeks at a time, slowly making their way between temples and villages. It was, and still remains, the perfect solution for those individuals or groups that sought a bit of adventure, but wanted a comfortable bed to sleep in at the end of the day.

This style of travel is recommended for families or self-formed groups who are turned off by the idea of traveling on a large cruise ship and want to experience the Nile with a touch of class.

Depending upon the season, prices range from $250 to $350 per person per night and include breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.

You have the choice of two Dahabiya styles – one is wind-powered and the other is motor-driven.

Wind-powered Dahabiyas are available on a private basis for a minimum of 4 nights. They feature an array of en suite bedrooms with screened windows and, often times, air-conditioning. The living room and upper decks are the perfect places to relax while your private chef prepares the day’s dishes.

Motor-driven Dahabiyas are available on a shared or private basis for a minimum of 3 nights. They also feature a variety of en suite bedrooms with air-conditioning. Some of the Dahabiyas feature a Jacuzzi on the top deck and are, of course, fully staffed.

Please note that a minimum number of passengers are required for the boat to sail. We may be able to pair you with other interested parties. Wind-powered journeys commence in the North (Esna or Edfu) and end in the South (Kom Ombo or Aswan).

Lake Nasser

Far away from civilization and mass tourism, you will have the privilege of exploring the newly charted region between Aswan and Abu Simbel.

This area is not only home to the temples of Abu Simbel, Wadi el Seboua, Dakka, and Amada, but also to a variety of birds, the last colonies of Nile crocodiles, monitor lizards, and gazelles. Once in a while, we will come across nomads, but this is an unforgiving terrain where beauty reigns supreme. Fishing for the famous Nile Perch, relaxing on board, and embarking on beautiful desert walks along the lake and through the dunes are just some of the activities you will enjoy on your 3, 4, or 5 night program.

Depending upon the season, prices range from $175 to $400 per person per night and include breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.

The newest additions to the Backpacker Concierge family are two out-of-this-world opportunities:

Adventure: 12 passenger boat with shared sleeping quarters
Boutique: 8 passenger boat with 4 private bedrooms

Please note that a minimum number of passengers are required for the boat to sail. We may be able to pair you with other interested parties. Journeys can start from Aswan or Abu Simbel, as these boats do not require wind to sail.
